Career Coaching: How I Can Help You Get Ahead in Your Career

Career coaching is not a super well-known service in Australia. And in fact, a lot of people send me messages asking what career coaching involves. So, today I thought I’d break it down for you.

I’m sharing the main reasons my clients engage me, as well as the different options you have for working with me. If you have any questions or you’d like to chat further, you can book a free 15 minute consultation with me using the link at the bottom of this post.

What is career coaching?

Well, career coaching is a partnership between you and a coach, who guides you through a process of understanding and overcoming any challenges you face. This sounds pretty broad, I know. But, no two clients are the same, so packages are tailored to your specific needs.

The difference in the ways that I coach, are that I kind of combine coaching and consulting together. You see, in traditional coaching, you always have the answers and it is the coach’s responsibility to help you uncover those answers. Consulting on the other hand, allows a level of advice to be provided and given my extensive experience in human resources and recruitment, I tend to offer a lot of advice in addition to supporting your self-discovery.

What tools do you use in your career coaching?

I utilise a range of tools and resources to support you throughout your coaching series. Again, I tailor the tools and resources I use based on your needs in each session. I have a substantial library of resources I refer to, based on my own study and development. But below, I’ve included a list of some of the other aids that I use in my practice.

DISC behavioural profiling

If you’ve been around here for a while, you’ll know I am a huge fan of DISC. DISC is a behavioural profiling tool that can help us to better understand your behavioural preferences, strengths, development areas and options to manage energy. I offer several options when using DISC in my coaching practice, including the provision of a comprehensive 20-page DISC Advanced® profile that we can use to guide your coaching series.

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP)

I have recently completed my NLP Practitioner Certification and I am finding it incredibly useful in my career coaching practice. NLP is basically the practice of using language to remap your neural pathways, to overcome mindset challenges and help you achieve your goals. Basically… haha! NLP techniques are useful in a range of circumstances and can help you to deep dive into your limiting beliefs and start to move ahead despite them.

Knowdell Motivated Skills and Values card sorts

I absolutely love the Knowdell tools. Partly because they come in card form and I love a physical product! Whether we utilise this tool face to face, or you complete the card sort electronically, these tools can provide great insight into your motivated skills, burnout skills, development areas and values. This is fantastic for gaining clarity around your next steps!

MYERS-BRIGGS TYPE INDICATOR (MBTI)

Although I am not a certified MBTI coach, I often find that completing an online MBTI test can be super revealing (I am an INFJ, what about you?). If you want to check it out, you can go to 16 Personalities. It’s free, quick and provides so much valuable information about your personality in different areas of your life. Depending on what you’re working through, this can be a helpful tool in uncovering more about who you are intrinsically.

Matrix timeline therapy

Okay, so Matrix timeline therapy may sound a little wackadoo. But it is totally legitimate and I have experienced the benefits. This technique can be used to overcome certain feelings, as well as limiting beliefs (this is where I have found it to be very powerful in my career coaching!). I am a certified Matrix therapy consultant and only use this tool once we have developed a strong relationship, as it requires a level of vulnerability.

Adesso®

Adesso® is a new tool that I've become certified in using. It is an assessment that provides insights into various aspects of your wellbeing, and identifies gaps that we can focus on in our coaching. This is a super useful tool and I have thoroughly enjoyed both completing the Adesso® training and beginning to use this tool with my clients.

Let's talk about how to make yourself more employable!

SO, WHY DO PEOPLE ENGAGE A CAREER COACH?

Great question! Most of my clients come to me for career coaching in one or more of these three areas. Clarity, Mindset and Accountability. We’ll dive in a little deeper with these below, but I just want to point out that the more you have to work through, the more sessions you’ll likely require. Seems sensible, right? If you only need help in one area, a three-session package may be enough for you to achieve results. But if you feel like you resonate with a few of the points below, you might want to consider signing up for a six or twelve session package, to allow yourself the freedom to explore yourself and your options more deeply (and save a bit of money!).

CLARITY

Clarity is all about understanding what to do next AND how to do it. There are a few different areas that this might show up for you in your career. Are you:

  • feeling unsure about what to do next in your career?
  • clear about the path you want to take, but not sure how to achieve it?
  • needing help articulating your skills, strengths and achievements?
  • wanting to improve the way you show up in interviews?
  • interested in starting a side hustle/side project but need some guidance?

These are just some of the examples, where career coaching around clarity can help to take you to the next level in your career.

Mindset

Mindset is a huge topic and can cover so many different areas. We all experience mindset challenges and coaching around mindset involves understanding what is holding you back and how to overcome it. Are you:

  • experiencing imposter syndrome? (feeling like a fraud, not feeling X enough)
  • needing assistance in boosting your confidence?
  • wanting to tackle self-doubt and negative self-talk?
  • requiring assistance in dealing with a specific situation or challenge?
  • looking for ways to feel more fulfilled in your career?

As I said. Mindset is huge. If you can understand the mindset challenges and limiting beliefs that are blocking you from reaching your goals, you can employ techniques to move forward despite them.

Accountability

Finally, let’s talk about accountability. Sometimes my clients just need some ongoing support and guidance in achieving their career goals. Perhaps you already have the tools to achieve your goal (maybe because we’ve already worked together), but you need help staying on track. Or maybe, if your goal is a big badass one, you need someone by your side to help you manage your actions and tasks.

There’s an element of accountability in all of my career coaching packages. I do provide homework between sessions and help to make sure you’re proactively working towards your desired outcome. I also offer email support between sessions, so if something comes up for you, you don’t need to wait until our next appointment to chat about it! Jump onto email and let’s hash it out so that you can continue making progress.

Sounds great! Where do I sign up?

Woooot! I’m excited that you’re interested in proceeding with career coaching and I would be delighted to work with you. You can view all the information about my career coaching packages, here. To sign up, you can just click one of the buttons on this page to book your package and schedule your first appointment, noting that I offer the option to pay in full, or in fortnightly or monthly instalments.
